I have recently begun going back to in-person rehearsals, but not as a full choir. I meet each week with only 6 singers and an accompanist. The rest of the choir still Zooms into the rehearsal, but now they are able to hear someone singing their part. It’s much less like singing by yourself. I feel like our progress has amplified 10-fold. Still not perfect, but a step in the right direction!
Hey Steve, that’s great progress! Are you meeting indoors or outdoors? What’s your AV setup for getting good sound from the chorus?
I’m imagining that this would be a lot closer to rehearsing all together in person where your coaching of those 6 singers can also help people singing at home.
I’d love to hear more about your experience.
I am wearing a wireless lapel mic that plugs into the computer for the Zoom call. We have a mic on the piano as well. We’re using four choir mics to pick up the singers. I don’t know a lot about the specs. I have a sound engineer that has been hooking everything up. We’re meeting inside but with plenty of room to spread out - and we leave doors/windows cracked open for ventilation. Everyone stays masked the whole time.
It has made a huge difference for the singers at home, but also has been huge for me to have audio feedback to my instructions - which I was missing when we were all on Zoom.
